Identification Requirements

Main content start

As the 1968 Policy on Campus Disruptions specifies:

Among the forms of university identification that are considered valid are university ID cards and SUNet IDs. In fulfilling the obligation to identify themselves, members of the faculty, staff, and student body must also briefly remove any face covering or mask when requested to do so in order to allow verification of identity. Visitors to campus will be under the same obligation. Individuals who fail to comply with these policies may be subject to discipline, being escorted off campus, and arrest where appropriate.

Individuals should also note that California Penal Code Section 185 makes it unlawful for any person to wear a mask for the purpose of “evading or escaping discovery, recognition, or identification in the commission of any public offense.”

In light of the fact that trespassers pose a particular risk in student residences, identification may be required of persons in student residences at any time. Furthermore, classrooms and administrative buildings are not generally open to the public; identification may also be required in these locations at any  time.
